Disability Awareness

General Campaign: The Arc of the Mid Ohio Valley feels strongly that it is imperative to promote an awareness of what intellectual, cognitive, and developmental disabilities are in an effort to gain a greater understanding and acceptance of individuals with disabilities. To this end, staff provides members, families, professionals, organizations, and the community-at-large with information about these issues, through:

• Developing Public Awareness collateral items and support materials that effectively communicate disability awareness messages.

• Attending special events/health & safety fairs to distribute messages on intellectual, cognitive, and related developmental disabilities via the use of a static display and/or PowerPoint presentations. • Involving community members/volunteers to increase exposure of key messages.

• Distributing quarterly newsletters for each of the following: The Arc of the Mid Ohio Valley, TechLink, Mid Ohio Valley Down Syndrome Association, and WV Birth to Three.

Living Together Illustration"Living Together" Disability Awareness Project: Initially funded by a grant from the West Virginia Developmental Disabilities Council, the Living Together Disability Awareness Project enables The Arc of the Mid Ohio Valley to distribute training material in the form of a coloring book that is designed at a 3rd grade level. Each year, presentations are made to approximately 300 elementary school students to educate them on various disabilities and appropriate ways to communicate and interact with those with developmental disabilities. Smaller grants are secured as needed, for re-printing the publication.
